The Big Screen vs. Streaming

To many people, film is seeing a brand new movie, popcorn in-hand, on the silver screen. However, the age of streaming has quickly changed that to enjoying a new movie from the comfort of your own home.

Physical and Digital

Over the past few years, ticket sales have declined at the box office, despite major franchises such as Star Wars and Marvel, releasing multiple big blockbusters. In 2019 alone, the box office was down 9%, even with Avengers Endgame, the film that overtook James Cameron's Avatar as the highest grossing film of all time. When looking at the reasons why, it is clear the more and more people are favoring streaming over going to the theater to enjoy a film. In today's age everyone's busy, so being able to enjoy watching a film from the comfort of your own home is more ideal to many. Despite releasing months after the physical release in theaters, many people do not mind the wait.

How Covid Affects the Theater Business

Recent events make it near impossible for the average person to enjoy some of their favorite pastimes, and visiting your favorite theater is no different. The lock down caused by the spread of Covid-19 forced cinemas to close their doors back in March. While most theaters have started to open with new procedures and rules, many films that were to be released during the past few months have either been delayed, or moved to be released digitally. With an already reduced capacity, and major releases such as Disney's live-action Mulan and Universal's Trolls 2 going straight to streaming, it's tough to see theaters recovering anytime soon. With the fear of Covid still big in the general public, many people just feel more safe watching new movies from their home, rather than in a public place. Until things begin to go back to the way they were, the streaming industry has had a significant advantage over theatrical releases.
